What I learned from my roosters…

Image
A few months ago we added chickens to our backyard.   Yes, we already had one, but she is more like a member of the family… I joke that she needed pets. Molly Boy We had one chicken that was ‘unsexed’ and knew we had a 50/50 shot of a hen, which is what we wanted.   However, as Big Red started showing signs that he was indeed a young rooster, our little Molly started to crow (he is now known as Molly Boy). When I am already awake and going about my day, I don’t mind hearing the roosters crowing.   In fact, I find it endearing.   I even enjoy hearing their little ‘crow-offs’ in the middle of the day.   However, roosters do like to crow at (or just before) the break of dawn.   And when I am sleeping, I do not like to hear a rooster crowing. That once sweet enjoyable sound grates on my nerves.   The roosters are doing the same thing they always do, but at that moment I do not want to hear it… I do not want to be awakened. The other day I when I was listening to the roost

Spending Time with Sinners

Image
We can all agree Jesus did spend time with sinners. He did so to save them.  We, too, must spend time with people in order to bring them to a saving knowledge of Christ.  That means we have to get go into the trenches and that means things get messy.  In my last blog I mentioned a leadership training I facilitated in April.  Another speaker on that DVD spoke of a church giving out condoms and tourniquets. The message I got was that we were to love all moms - and that we show them love by helping them sin safely.  I certainly agree we should love all moms - all people - regardless of their lifestyles or religions. But I believe we should love them enough to not only interact with them, but to tell them the truth.  Tell them of what Jesus has done.  Tell them of the consequences of sin but that there is a free gift of life waiting for them to accept. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23) Y

On Coming Alive...

Blooming flowers always remind me of coming alive - of a blooming of the soul. ~ Sara There are a lot of organizations, life coaches, and even songs inviting people to come alive. In April I hosted a leadership training event for a ministry in which I was involved at the time. Most of our training was on a DVD.  There was one speaker on the DVD who said “everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.  Anyone who loves anyone knows God and has been born of God… anyone who has interacted with love at all knows God and has been born of God.”  He continued later to say he wants to be the kind of person that no matter what people are doing in their world/in their life they knew that he is a person who believes in God and saw God in them. “Because if they love they know God and are born of God.” Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6). Scripture also says: “No one who is born of God practice

My Condolences...

Image
I had been intentionally staying away from posting about the hate-filled crimes of this past weekend. I did not see how my words could convey what is in my heart. However, I am grieved by what I see on social media and in the news. Terrible things happened over the weekend. Many people are dead, many are injured, and many more are living in fear. And on top of that, many people are pushing the envelope with posts and memes that do nothing but cause more pain, anger, and hate. First, let me say, anyone who is rejoicing over the tragedies of this weekend is not in Christ, no matter how loudly they may tell you they are Christians.  They are not walking with Him, because He does not rejoice in this. The Bible *  tells us God takes no pleasure in the deaths of those who do not know Him. Secondly, I want to tell everyone who was directly or indirectly impacted by the murders of this weekend, I am sorry.  I am sorry for the loss of loved ones.  I am sorry for the hurt and pain and

How can I know the truth?

“Note well! Satan does not always try to ruin faith by saying, “The Bible isn’t true.” He often tries to destroy our faith by affirming some passage and using it to lead us into disobedience.” - John Piper I admit there are times when I do not read my Bible as often as I should.  I am striving to do better - to set a good example for my children and to keep myself well-founded in Truth. I have found myself running to God's Word more these past few months than in a long time. I used to read it because I 'was supposed to.' Now I read it because I desire to. But I still need encouragement and accountability to stick with it.  God’s Word speaks to all of us.  We do not need a theology degree nor do we need to master Hebrew or Greek. What we need to understand the Scriptures is the Holy Spirit within us. When discussing scripture, be wary of those who name their accomplishments - seminary, theology degrees, learning of Greek and Hebrew, etc. - to try to sway you.

A Difficult Decision...

Most of my friends know how much ministry to moms has meant to me and my family.  After seven years of participating and leading in my local group of a mom's ministry I became a field leader (volunteer staff). I recently retired from the ministry, where I served in a volunteer position representing the organization for six and half years - the final four as the leader over Kentucky and Tennessee.  Through this organization my life has changed - my family has changed.  We have grown.  I have grown as a mom, wife, and leader. But more importantly, I grew closer to our Lord. Many of you know that God has called me to serve in other places - first in my home, secondly in my homeschool community.  However, there was a bigger reason for my retiring before the end of the ministry year… a theological reason.  This year the organization's leadership training incorporates teaching that I have concluded is in direct conflict with Scripture.  I do not make such a statement lightly - I
